Sketching out boxy volumes to stack down a hillside is a helpful tool to start reigning in the early ideas about proportion, where projections will look right, what height differences should be used, and even basic square footage guides for each level. These studies don't often resemble the final design, but are a behind-the-scenes look at a piece of the three dimensional brainstorming that goes into architectural design.
